Appendix B - Responsible Entities

Campus departments, units, or individuals play a primary role in facilitating issues, providing recommendations, or assisting others regarding online activity questions. The following list provides descriptions of the general functions they currently may perform. Also see "Resource Offices" available to provide expertise and advice in particular areas and "Additional Resources", listed below.

Online publisher (faculty, student, staff, contractor)
must adhere to all applicable policies and regulations and be aware of policies and guidelines for conduct of online activities. This person is accountable to the department or unit head who supervises the employment or relationship of that person to the University.
Service provider/system administrator
must notify responsible authority if they become aware of potential violations of law or policy by online activities resident on servers under their administration. Any removal of material, restriction of access, or cessation of activities must follow established campus and departmental guidelines and due process procedures.
Project manager
will initiate efforts to resolve reported incidents of potential policy violation involving project's activities, following local guidelines and procedures for handling their investigation and response.
Department or unit head
will initiate efforts to resolve reported incidents of potential policy violation by entities affiliated with that department who are using resources of the department or are providing online activities on behalf of that department.*
Campus agent for copyright infringements
is registered with the U.S. Copyright Office to receive any notifications claiming infringements on UC Berkeley locations. Appropriately formulated claims should be directed to itpolicy@berkeley.edu. For details see Copyright Information Resources.
Public Affairs Office
is responsible for the Berkeley Home Page and the secondary sub-site pages that aggregate registered Berkeley sites by category. Technical questions should be directed to the Webmaster at www@www.berkeley.edu.
Instructional Technology Program (ITP)
is responsible for the Course site Registry (CHPR), a part of the Faculty Internet Service Center (FISC).
Student activities and services
is responsible for the registration of Student Organization website Home Pages.
University relations
is responsible for establishing and posting policies, procedures, and forms for soliciting private gifts to the Berkeley Campus via the Internet. To coordinate campus donations, campus entities are advised to establish links to the online remittance form maintained by University Relations.
Office of Marketing and Management of Trademarks (OMMT)
is responsible for all commercial uses of the University's trademarks by negotiating with non-University and University entities uses of the University name, seal or logo. OMMT reviews those commercial uses in order to determine if the "best interests of the University" are served by the promotion of its trademarks.
System and Network Security (SNS) Office
coordinates policies, controls, and procedures to protect Berkeley Campus computer system and network resources. To report security incidents involving campus computing system and network resources send email to: security@berkeley.edu.

The department or unit head may develop additional policies and guidelines specific to activities under their jurisdiction.

It is recommended that departments establish local guidelines and procedures for handling their investigation and response to reports alleging violations of law and/or University policy involving persons and resources under their jurisdiction. (For example, as part of their procedures, departments may create steering committees to examine and discuss issues regarding departmental-related online activities, and to recommend resolutions of disagreements.) The campus Guidelines for Administering Appropriate Use of Campus Computing and Network Services were drafted to assist departments to ensure appropriate use of those resources and to respond correctly to allegations of misuse.

The campus can assist with referral or actions on allegations of computer misuse. In particular, the Privacy, Policy and Security staff may be able to provide assistance in situations for which a department has not yet developed local procedures.
