Presentation Abstract:

The College Library Instructional Computing Commons (CLICC) implemented a laptop loaner program in 1999 in response to a need for more student access to computers. Since then, the program has grown from a start of 10 laptops to nearly 200 to be implemented in Fall 2002. The laptops are checked out to students as a supplment to the lab's 100 (non-laptop) stations and 100 classroom stations. Some of the laptops are also currently being used in a wireless pilot program, and we plan to make all of our laptop loaners capable of connecting to the wireless network as well as through plug-in ports throughout the 5 libraries. In the presentation, I will describe the programs and infrastructure that enable us to check out laptops (and get them back safely), provide statistics on use over time, describe user responses to the program, and discuss our expansion plans for the coming year. The goal of this presentation is to show how UCLA is using laptops to effectively increase computing resources for students without expanding the physical space of computer labs.
