CalNet Passphrase Complexity Requirements Update

August 4, 2020

Update on 8/17/20: These changes have been delayed and will now be implemented on Sept. 1, 2020.

Dear Colleagues,

In an effort to improve CalNet passphrase security and to align with the systemwide UC Account and Authentication Management Standard, CalNet is updating the passphrase complexity requirement standards. Changes to the requirements will be implemented on August 17, 2020.

The updated requirements will only affect newly created accounts or passphrases changed after the implementation date.

What’s changing?

The regular passphrase will increase in length from 9 to 12 characters. Alternatively, users can select to use a long passphrase with no complexity requirements (must be more than 20 characters). More information is available on the CalNet passphrase requirements page: https://calnetweb.berkeley.edu/calnet-me/how-claim-your-calnet-id/passphrase-requirements

Actions:

No action is needed at this time, this will only affect newly created accounts or passphrases changed after the implementation date.

In the fall, CalNet will be launching a campaign to encourage users to update their passphrases in accordance with the new complexity requirements and will communicate directly with users.
