Important bCourses and bSpace Updates

To the Campus Community,

We wanted to take a moment to share with you some upcoming milestones regarding the final phase of the two-year bSpace replacement project. The team in Educational Technology Services (ETS) has been working diligently over the past several months to carry-out and support the campus transition from bSpace to bCourses. Please take a moment to review the important project dates below:

  • October 31, 2014: Final day to create new bSpace projects.
  • November 1, 2014: Faculty & Staff can request bCourses Project sites.
  • Through June 30, 2015: Full access to existing bSpace course and project sites continues.
  • June 30, 2015: bSpace retired and off-line and Content Archive Retrieval Service launched.

We are pleased to announce the introduction of bCourses Project sites beginning November 1, 2014. This service is a result of user-requests and will enhance the portfolio of IT collaboration tools available to the campus. bCourses Project sites will have different functionality and features compared to bSpace. To ensure the collaboration tool you select will meet your specific needs and because there are several tools available across campus, it is important that you review all of the options available to you before deciding which tool to use.

If you are familiar with bCourses and need simple wiki or discussion tools to facilitate collaboration within a group, bCourses may be the right tool for you. However, if you use complex workflows, need custom permissions, or want to collaborate with colleagues who do not have a CalNet ID, we encourage you to consider alternatives that better meet those specific needs.

If you have reviewed the available options and believe a bCourses Project site will meet your needs, you may may request a project site starting today.

The bCourses team will respond to requests on a first come, first served basis. The team will complete your request within 5 business days.

ETS, IS&T and other campus service providers across campus will host a collaboration tools Town Hall in January or February of the new year. This will be a great opportunity to learn more about the different collaboration services available.
