ReIT Program Update #22

April 23, 2019

One IT Colleagues,

This month it was great to see our One IT community featured in the UC IT Blog. The article is a good summary of all the work we have done together over the past several years, where we started and where we are today. As the academic year is drawing to a close, we are looking forward to our final Open Seminar being held next Monday. Larry Conrad and Jenn Stringer will review progress and plans related to One IT and the updated ReIT Plan, and will answer your questions. In addition, several projects will be presented. Please plan to join us!

Cloud Strategy Progress Report

The education technology ecosphere charges forward, meeting the evolving needs and demand by streamlining cloud procurement, continuing to move to modern workplace practices like DevOps, and developing resilient cloud-aligned IT architectures. Charting a course from our June 2017 goals, we have:

  • Migrated the University's main website and other services to AWS (IST & Public Affairs)
  • Community: launched v1 Cloud Resource Center and ITAIC/DevOps workgroup (CIAT)
  • Secured University-wide cloud contracts for AWS, Azure and GCP
  • Provided Kubernetes training to 60 people (led by Eric Fraser/EECS)
  • Launched the UC Berkeley Cloud Computing Meetup

IT Service Catalog and Knowledge Ecosystem Refresh

Our annual review of all content for IT service-related online materials will kickoff with a training workshop on May 13. Each year we work with partners across One IT to ensure that our customer-facing materials (Service Catalog entries, knowledge base  articles, wiki and websites, etc.) are up to date, clear and useful for our campus customers. This year we will put extra effort into our knowledge base environment as we strive toward increasing self-service. Design enhancements of the Technology @ Berkeley website are also reviewed during this time to integrate changes to improve user experience just in time for fall start. IT Service Catalog | Knowledge Base

Last call for Exhibits / Posters for IT Summit

Thank you to everyone who has already submitted a proposal to share their work in the Exhibit Hall and Poster Session. We have extended the deadline to submit your proposal to this Friday, April 26. Submit your proposal for an exhibit or poster today! An exhibit or poster provides an opportunity for your team to highlight their work and accomplishments for the year. If you submitted a proposal to UCTech (formerly UCCSC), the summit is a great place to share your work locally before the UC-wide event. These sessions have continued to be a favorite among conference attendees. If you have any questions, please contact Bernie Rossi at rossi@berkeley.edu. Need some inspiration? Check out last year’s posters.

Piloting New Performance Management Program

As you may know, IST and the OCIO are among several campus units who are piloting Achieve, a new performance management system. In a communication to staff, Larry Conrad talks about the importance of answering the following question during check-in meetings supervisors are holding with their staff: “How has your work supported the overall strategy and/or mission of your department and/or the campus? I am asking all of you to consider this question in relation to the recently updated Reimagining IT Strategic Plan. The update to the ReIT plan was specifically designed to draw a direct line-of-site connection between our ReIT work and the new Campus Strategic Plan. This is an important opportunity for us to underscore and demonstrate to campus leadership that IT is a strategic partner in helping achieve campus goals.” View all 6 questions to consider
