Supporting Computationally Intensive Research on Campus
Presenters:

  • Zane Cooper, Director of Research Computing - Haas
  • Jason Christopher, Architect - Research IT
  • Aaron Culich, Architect - Research IT
  • Kelly Rowland, Consultant - Berkeley Research Computing | Graduate Student - Nuclear Engineering

This panel, representing D-Lab, BIDS, IST, Research IT, will discuss the challenges of supporting computationally intensive research and the work being done across the campus to address the current needs, as well as to plot a course for future innovations. Please join us in a discussion to cover the following questions:

  • How do campus IT staff  support computationally intensive research on campus?
  • How does research support differ from enterprise/administrative support?
  • If a researcher needs a secure computing environment, or to transfer hundreds of terabytes of data, how should fulfillment of these requirements be managed?
  • What resources for secure computing and data management are available to researchers now?
  • What additional services should be considered or developed?
  • Technology platforms and services change over time as do the computational needs of researchers during the lifecycle of a project. For example, the storage solution for the data acquisition stage of a project may not be the right solution for the later stage of data sharing with the public. Given this slipperiness, what factors should be considered before adopting specific technologies and services?

ServiceNow: Enabling IT Service Management at UC Berkeley
Presenter: Scott Hall, Manager & Architect - ServiceNow - IST Enterprise Applications

Come hear how ServiceNow is enabling the ITSM transformation through better collaboration, improved visibility, and better customer engagement. Improving IT Service Management is a core focus of the campus IT Action Plan. IT Service Management (ITSM) is a process-based practice intended to align the delivery of information technology (IT) services with the needs of our customers. In order to accomplish this goal, improvements in both process and technology must be made, and ServiceNow is a critical component of this strategy.
