Track 1: Paving a Path for the Future: Teaching and Research, Cloud Strategy, and Workforce Development

This track will provide sessions for you to learn more about three of the the six strategies in the Reimagining IT Strategic Plan. First, the Teaching, Learning, and Research working group will explore various tactics to provide faculty and students with the essential tools and data they need. Second, a panel of IT professionals from across campus IT units will talk about their professional journey to the work they do now and the skills they think are needed as part of our developing Workforce Strategy. And third, members of the Cloud Strategy working group will discuss how the campus is responding to the wide range of cloud-based services available to us and what a UC Berkeley cloud strategy should address.

Description

This session will explore the Reimagining IT work performed by the Research, Teaching and Learning (RTL) Core Services group. Participants will discuss the recommended tactics for Teaching and Research technologies. By providing important information about the impact and feasibility of service-specific recommendations, this discussion will support the next phase of our Reimagining IT work.

We know that our workforce of the future will need to develop a new set of skills and capacities. To help imagine what may be in store for our future career paths, we’ve assembled a panel of 5-6 people from across the IT community who have re-imagined their own career paths and made the leap into new roles and/or organizations. Each panelist will share their own unique experiences to offer their first-hand perspective, followed by a Q&A session with questions from the audience.

UC Berkeley has had a cloud strategy for 8 years and many systems in the cloud. As we take stock of where we are now and where we want to be in the next 5-10 years, come help us think about where we go with the cloud from here! Where are we *not* all in with the cloud? What do the next few years look like? How do we position policy, security, legal, procurement, governance for services in the cloud? These are just a few of the questions we will explore.
