The quality and capabilities of IT for the University are directly tied to the quality and capabilities of our IT workforce. Now more than ever, we need to invest in that workforce. To that end, we have developed a comprehensive workforce strategy and professional development program for OCIO/IST.
Despite the challenges we are currently facing, UC Berkeley is an exciting, leading-edge institution and a great place to build a career for the long term.
As the first step in the workforce development planning process, in the fall of 2016 we gathered information about job satisfaction from OCIO/IST staff via the Gallup Q12 Engagement Survey. This survey was also previously completed by staff in SAIT, CSS IT, and ETS. View survey results here.
The OCIO/IST Directors, with input from staff, selected two areas from the Gallup Q12 Engagement Survey as a focus as part of the first year of the OCIO/IST Workforce Strategy program. These are questions 1 and 6:
- Q1: I know what is expected of me at work.
- Q6: There is someone at work who encourages my development.
OCIO/IST Directors have reviewed and finalized the 2018 OCIO/IST Staff Development Plan. This year's plan include Diversity and Inclusion and Telling Our Story. Some of the learning outcomes and qualifying experiences relate to competencies that we want to be shared consistently across our organization, and some of them are intended to support you in defining and growing your own career. We strongly encourage each staff to do at least one activity in each of the tracks in 2018.

Workforce Strategy Committee
The OCIO/IST Workforce Strategy program is a committee comprised of a group of people from across the organization that leads the day to day management and execution of the strategy and development plan. An example of the things that this group is doing is determining what kinds of activities we should undertake as an organization to help address and improve our Gallup ratings, with a focus on the Gallup questions we have chosen to address in any given year.
