Network Update: Policy Changes for eduroam Guest Users effective April 21

Publication date

Hello One IT Community,

On Tuesday, April 21, we will be implementing an update to the eduroam wireless network. This change will primarily impact guest users of eduroam from other institutions. Please read through the FAQs below.

What is changing?

We are updating how guests from partner institutions (users logging in with credentials other than @berkeley.edu) connect to the eduroam Wi-Fi network. These guest users will be transitioned to a new set of networks without requiring any action on their part.

Why is this happening?

This transition allows campus service providers to create more specific security and access policies. By better identifying guest traffic, we can expand the flexibility of service owners while still providing comprehensive service to guests.

Who is impacted by this change?

Guest users of eduroam who use credentials from other institutions. Examples include {user}@mit.edu and {user}@ucdavis.edu, including visiting researchers.

Scholars visiting from other institutions who have previously relied on eduroam to browse Library databases will find that they cannot unless they have a Visiting Scholar appointment. More information is available at the Library visiting scholar page

Short-term visiting researchers who are not on an appointment will still be able to authenticate to their home institution’s library resources using their own off-campus access methods (such as VPN) or to the Library's existing public access protocols (such as designated public computers).

Who is not impacted?

Users of eduroam with {calnetID}@berkeley.eduaccounts and all users of the Berkeley-IoT Wi-Fi network.

Support Guidance

If a user reports issues accessing a service or resource previously available, they should verify that they are connected to eduroam using UC Berkeley credentials, are using Berkeley-IoT, and are not connected using Berkeley-Visitor. General access issues should check the IT Service Hub for related KB articles or reach out to IT Support

If a Berkeley user reports losing access to Library databases but is using the correct credentials on eduroam, reach out to the Library Electronic Resources unit: eru-library@berkeley.edu

Thank you for your attention to this matter. Please circulate this information to your networks, especially those in your units who may be impacted by this change.

Warm regards,
Network Services Team, Berkeley IT - Campus IT Infrastructure
