Charge

The Data Governance Committee (DGC) is responsible for providing strategic oversight of the management, access and use of one of the University’s most vital assets–its data.  The DGC recommends and supports the implementation of standards, policies and operating procedures for access, use and retention of data in enterprise applications and data subject to campus policy and external public records compliance regulations.  

Specifically, the DGC provides oversight and guidance for the following institutional data sets:

  • Admissions & Outreach
  • Library
  • Advising
  • Personnel (HR & APO)
  • Development and Alumni
  • Procurement
  • Facilities
  • Research Administration
  • Finance
  • Student Administration
  • Learning Management and Analytics
  • Other Administrative Data (e.g. student/faculty conduct, network)

Scope

  • Access control
    Establish standards for processing data access requests, implementing access, and storing access metadata.
  • Storage and sourcing policy
    Designate systems of record (SoRs) for institutional data and related retention policies.
  • Classification
    Establish a framework for setting data availability and protection levels consistently.
    (For the first three, the committee sets policy and standards, to be made operational by Institutional Information Proprietors.) 
  • Resource recommendations
    Review and prioritize new resource requirements for information areas and centralized data services.
  • Usage, stewardship, and compliance
    Foster and cultivate the environment and initiatives to increase data literacy and data informed decision making through education, training, and communities of practice.
  • Inventory and glossary
    Support accessible metadata for consistent use and in compliance with asset inventory requirements.
  • Technical strategy
    Provide input and guidance for the strategic direction of technologies used to integrate and analyze data.
