What We Do
The Business Operations unit enables the Berkeley IT organization to strategically manage our resources and high-priority initiatives, optimize our day-to-day operations, and provide leadership with the metrics and data they need to make informed decisions.

Billing & Voice Quality Assurance
Darin Clarke is the Manager of this team who works on recharges of Berkeley IT services to campus departments (plus other UC locations and non-UC affiliated entities). Examples of recharge services include (but are not limited to): AWS, Azure, Backup, CalShare, Cellular, Centrex, Data Center, Data Network, Database, Google Cloud, PBX, Premise Wiring, Software Sales, Storage, Unix, Virtual Machines, Wasabi, Web Platform, Windows, Zoom Upgrades, and more!
Building & Equipment Management
Led by Chris Bartlett, Manager, this team provides the following services:
- Coordination of daily operational building maintenance, Berkeley IT keys, and building access.
- Serves as Berkeley IT inventory custodian (BETS).
- Supervision of the Berkeley IT warehouse operations plus shipping and receiving.
- Berkeley IT vehicle coordination (safety and maintenance).
Communications
Rita Rosenthal, Director of Communications, leads this team to help connect our campus community to our services, communicating change, sharing news, and promoting events. We build community and more collaborative networks by engaging with campus partners through our One IT movement and committees we are members of on-campus, UC-wide, and in key higher ed spaces. Services include:
- Communications Strategy - We work with internal clients and campus partners to develop integrated strategic marketing and communications plans when there is a need to reach a campus-wide audience.
- Online Presence - We promote IT services, communicate changes in technology and new features as well as share news and events through the Technology@Berkeley website. We manage the IT Service Catalog, collaborating with service owners to keep their content updated in both the catalog and in the Knowledge Base.
- Writing & Editing - We offer writing services for the Office of the CIO with a multi-channel marketing approach in mind: email communications and e-newsletters, print collateral, infographics, news features, social media, and other online content.
- Graphic & Web Design - We help visually communicate and simplify complex or technical info for the campus community by providing graphic design services. From presentations to our online presence (e.g., buttons, banners, infographics, or fully designed Web pages), and related print materials (e.g., posters, handouts, brochures).
- Event Promotion - We help to promote events planned by Berkeley IT units, IT staff organizations, and other campus partners.
- Print Collateral - We are available to consult with Berkeley IT units on print pieces that may be needed as part of a larger communications campaign or one-off flyers and handouts.
Finance
Michelle Kresch is the Manager of this team of Department Budget Officers who:

Manage the development and execution of the department service’s multi-year and annual budget plans.

Advise Berkeley IT executive leadership on key budgetary decisions (e.g., allocating campus support), aligning resources, and suggesting budgetary trade-offs to meet the department’s strategic priorities.

Monitor budget-to-actuals updating the in-year forecast to provide real-time meaningful financial management reporting.

Process internal financial controls (e.g., SAS115, recharge) and ensure financial procedures are within compliance.
Technology
Bill Allison is UC Berkeley's Chief Technology Officer with responsibility for leading the University's overall technology architecture strategy. He leads cross-functional initiatives with IT directors that simplify, modernize, standardize, and evolve the University's technology infrastructure and IT roadmap. He is also the convener of the Berkeley IT Architecture Review Board and co-chairs the campus IT Architecture and Infrastructure Committee. Areas of focus:
Strategic Sourcing & Procurement
Led by David Willson, Manager, this team focuses on delivering financial, risk management, and business enablement value. A foundational bias of the program is to leverage system-wide (and beyond) resources as fully as possible to conserve limited local resources to engage on local priorities.
