Data Center & Cloud Services FAQ

Why are we doing this?

The campus is quickly outgrowing the capacity of Warren Hall. To maintain Berkeley’s status as a high-performing research institution, it needs to be able to support the increasing data needs of the students, faculty, and researchers.

When will Warren Hall be retired?

This is still being determined. For the foreseeable future, Warren Hall will continue to operate as normal until a migration plan is developed.

How will Warren Hall be repurposed?

This is still being determined. It is likely that the building will be repurposed as space on campus is limited and we want to ensure that it is used to best serve students and the community at large.

Will everything be virtualized to the cloud?

While some data will be virtualized, it is unlikely that this will be the case for everything currently residing in Warren Hall. Due to varying proximity needs for speed or other factors, it is likely that some data will remain on or near campus.

I currently use my own cloud credits for teaching/research. How will this be impacted?

The goal of this transformation is to centralize all data storage and processing efforts for the campus. We are working to develop a cloud approach that is amenable to and cost-effective for a variety of users.

Who was involved in the assessment phase of this project?

In addition to the steering committee, a variety of over 80 professors, researchers, and administrators were interviewed to shape the future state options for this project.

Why weren’t any students involved?

Some graduate students were interviewed as part of the assessment phase, but because of the short timeline, undergraduate students were not able to be included.

Is this project the same as the new Gateway building?

The new Gateway building is part of UC Berkeley’s Division of Computing, Data Science, and Society (CDSS). While it is separate from this assessment of Warren Hall, we are looking into how the efforts can collaborate.
