Annual Campus Copyright Reminder

October 8, 2025

Dear campus community:

As the fall semester begins, please take a moment to review this annual reminder about UC Berkeley’s commitment to compliance with federal copyright laws.

As a significant producer and consumer of intellectual property, the University has a profound interest in upholding copyright law. Additionally, penalties for violations, including unauthorized distribution of copyrighted material and illegal file sharing, can be very serious, including loss of network access and other actions under campus codes of conduct, civil and criminal penalties/fines, and even jail time for egregious violations.

Please see Appendix A of the Campus Plan for Combating Illegal File Sharing for information and resources about:

  • Appropriate vs. inappropriate use of copyrighted material.
  • Legal sources of online content.
  • UC and campus policies and sanctions related to copyright infringement.
  • Student disciplinary procedures.
  • A summary of civil and criminal liabilities/penalties for violation of federal copyright law.

A paper copy is available upon request to itpolicy@berkeley.edu. For more information on UC copyright regulations and resources, please visit: https://security.berkeley.edu/copyright-regulations-and-resources

Thank you for your attention to this important notice.
