New Cybersecurity Safeguards

January 28, 2025

Colleagues,

We are excited to share some upcoming cybersecurity safeguards for our campus. UC Berkeley’s reputation for excellence in research and academic integrity depends on the reliability and security of our data. By committing to cybersecurity best practices, each of us helps to protect groundbreaking research, preserve student privacy, and maintain the integrity and availability of our academic and administrative services.

Why do we need to change?

These safeguards are part of our Information Security Investment Program to increase security protocols and to address UC system-wide initiatives. As a staff member and trusted partner, your dedication and vigilance are essential in protecting our campus community from cyber threats.

What do I need to do?

  1. Complete Your Annual Cybersecurity Training: All UC employees must complete this annual training covering common cyber threats and actions to protect themselves and the campus.
  2. Stay tuned for communications on Berkeley Security SoftwareNew security software must be installed on all University-owned computers to ensure their protection and integrity. Look for instructions from your department security lead(s) in the next few weeks.
  3. Use Duo for Multifactor Authentication (MFA)Security enhancements are being implemented, and by March 18, 2025, specific authentication methods will be required to CalNet authenticate. Get ahead of the game. If you currently use text messages for CalNet, switch to the Duo Mobile App.

We appreciate your support. Together, we can “Safeguard UC Berkeley: Protect Data, Preserve Excellence.”
