Wi-Fi Updates & Increased Tech Support Next Week

March 28, 2023

To our campus community,

We are excited to share the latest updates in improvements we have been making to our campus Wi-Fi networks. We launched Berkeley-IoT (Internet of Things) in January, which helps the campus community gain Wi-Fi access on devices that do not support eduroam authentication. At the beginning of March we launched Berkeley-Visitor, a new option that will improve the user experience for short-term campus visitors. As of today, the CalVisitor network will no longer be visible as a Wi-Fi option on campus. Devices with this network saved as a connection option will still be able to connect. New devices will not see CalVisitor as an available Wi-Fi service. Visitors to campus should use the new Berkeley-Visitor service. Students, faculty, staff and other community members with CalNet IDs should use eduroam or Berkeley-IoT if their device does not support eduroam. See the information below about each type of Wi-Fi and the importance of selecting the appropriate option based on the device you are using.

Increased Wi-Fi Support for Faculty & Staff Next Week

To help get faculty and staff connected to eduroam or alternate Wi-Fi networks, we are hosting in-person drop-in support Monday, April 3 through Friday, April 7, 9 a.m. to noon, 1-4 p.m. at the following locations:

Wi-Fi Support For Students

The student helpdesk provides free tech support to all students at UC Berkeley in person, by phone, and via email. View tech support hours, locations, and contact info.

Campus Wi-Fi Options

Eduroam is the most stable and secure, authenticated service providing network access on campus. All students, faculty, and staff should connect to eduroam especially when using desktop computers, laptops, phones, tablets, and smart devices. Follow the instructions to connect based on your operating system:

Berkeley-IoT is now available in buildings across UC Berkeley where eduroam is found. Berkeley-IoT can be used on devices that do not support the eduroam username and password-based authentication. This is a new encrypted wireless network to support the internet of things for devices for education and research, such as classroom clickers, digital signage, eReaders, printers, and lab equipment (e.g. data loggers, microscopes, sensors). This network can also be leveraged for our residence hall community in-home devices, where it can replace a physical ethernet cable in most situations. Examples of using Berkeley-IoT in residence halls include streaming devices (e.g. Firestick, Roku, Chromecast), game consoles, personal assistants, printers and scanners, projectors, and TVs. Learn how to connect to Berkeley-IoT.

Berkeley-Visitor is for short-term visitors who do not have an eduroam account. It does not require registration but has a click-through page with terms of use. This option is best suited for non-affiliated visitors to campus where they are invited to connect computers, laptops, phones, and tablets. Berkeley-Visitor is now running concurrently with CalVisitor through the end of the spring semester. Starting March 28, 2023, new devices will be unable to connect to CalVisitor and the network will be completely retired as of July 1, 2023.

This work is part of our Network User Experience program, a coordinated effort of multiple projects to make networking more secure and robust, provide more features, and address previous network challenges.
