Wi-Fi 6E Now Available on Campus

April 9, 2025

As part of our continued efforts to expand and improve Wi-Fi services on campus, Berkeley IT is pleased to announce the availability of Wi-Fi 6E on campus. This technology was enabled on Monday, March 17, across all campus and campus housing locations, where available.

Take Wi-Fi 6E for a Spin

To take advantage of Wi-Fi 6E, you must be connected to the primary UC Berkeley W-Fi service, eduroam. If you are already using eduroam, no further action is needed as your device will automatically connect at the best available speed in your area. Note, the access points in the area and your device must both support Wi-Fi 6E. Currently, about 3,000 of the 7,500 access points on campus have been upgraded for Wi-Fi 6E. Work to upgrade the remaining access points is ongoing.

Benefits

Wi-Fi 6E includes several technology improvements that enhance the user experience. These include:

  • Better speed and more devices: Additional channel and frequency capacity enables more devices to connect seamlessly, even in crowded environments. It also greatly improves the speed of connections. Tests conducted by Berkeley IT have shown improvements of up to 100% in network speed while on Wi-Fi 6E.

  • Improved security and privacy: Improved authentication and encryption protocols (WPA3 Enterprise) to safeguard the security and integrity of data.
