Coming May 24: Annual Wi-Fi certificate update for eduroam

May 18, 2022

To our campus community,

Eduroam offers the best and most secure access to the campus Wi-Fi network. You may be prompted to accept or trust the certificate in order to connect. If you are prompted, please accept the certificate to get connected to the wireless network.

Why is this happening?

To keep our wireless network secure, authentication for eduroam is protected by an SSL certificate. SSL stands for Secure Sockets Layer, and an SSL certificate is a digital certificate that authenticates a website's identity and enables an encrypted connection. These certificates must be renewed each year. You may need to provide your approval before the certificate is accepted, allowing you to connect to Wi-Fi.

What do I need to do?

The first time you connect to eduroam on or after May 24, your computer (or other devices like phones, tablets, watches, etc.) may prompt you to accept a certificate for “wireless-auth.berkeley.edu.” Since operating systems vary, you may have different experiences with how the certificate will renew:

  • Your computer or device may silently accept the certificate without any prompts, requiring no action on your part.

  • A popup window may appear asking if you want to accept a trusted certificate. Please accept and proceed.

  • The popup window may instead ask for you to accept an untrusted certificate. Any time you are prompted to accept an untrusted certificate (or website), the best security practice is to not proceed. However, if your computer or device is operating on an older platform, it may report the new eduroam certificate as untrusted. You can either confirm that the certificate references “wireless-auth.berkeley.edu” and then accept it, or contact IT support if you need assistance.

Each of these scenarios depends entirely on the operating system and the type of device being used, which is why it cannot be addressed universally across campus by our IT teams. If prompted, accepting the certificate is a prerequisite for connecting to the eduroam wireless network. View examples of prompts you may see. If you are connecting to eduroam for the first time, please follow these steps.
