Data Center Power Outage: Systems Restored

February 14, 2024

To the campus community,

All campus systems have been restored and are now back online following a power outage at the Warren Hall Data Center early this morning.

What happened?

A power outage occurred in the data center around 3:40 a.m. disrupting Wi-Fi service and various administrative and research IT systems on campus. Power was restored to the Data Center and the Wi-Fi system resumed service by 9:15 a.m. The remaining campus IT systems were brought back online following a prioritized protocol throughout the morning and afternoon.

Why did this happen? Is this related to the outage last week?

Technicians determined that a failure of electrical equipment in the Data Center created smoke, which activated the fire suppression systems and automatically shut down power to prevent a fire and further damage. Both power outages at the Data Center involved the backup power system also known as the Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS), but the outage last week was not caused by the UPS. The cause of the equipment failure is under review.

Check Status & Get Help

The status of our campus systems is provided in near real-time on our System Status webpage. If you are experiencing any technical issues not already identified on the status page please contact the IT helpdesk for help.

Thank you for your patience as we worked to restore these systems. Our teams are committed to continuing their full post-incident reviews of both recent data center outages to identify root causes and implement preventative measures to avoid these incidents from happening in the future.

Regards,

Gabriel Gonzalez, Interim Associate Vice Chancellor for IT and Chief Information Officer
Dave Browne, Executive Director of Campus IT Infrastructure
