Data Center Power Outage Update: Campus Systems & Wi-Fi Restored

February 9, 2024

To the campus community,

Power at the Data Center is back on and all campus systems including Wi-Fi connectivity have been restored.

What happened?

Yesterday at approximately 11 a.m. our Data Center facility experienced a power outage due to multiple failures encountered with the backup power systems. This outage impacted access to several critical systems including CalTime, Cal Central, Campus Solutions (SIS), Cal Answers, Berkeley Financial System (BFS), BearBuy, Savio Condo/Berkeley Research Cluster, CCURE (Building Key Card panels), CalMessages (the ability to send campus-wide messages), and others. Campus Wi-Fi was also affected by the power outage, impacting connectivity for some users. Power along with Wi-Fi and several systems were restored yesterday afternoon then the remaining systems were recovered and available in the evening. We understand these issues may have disrupted your ability to work and apologize for any negative impacts on campus operations.

Why did this happen?

Testing was being conducted on a temporary generator that the Data Center uses. During this test, several components failed which caused a total loss of power to the Data Center.

How can this be avoided in the future?

A full post-incident review will be conducted to identify root causes, preventive measures, and lessons learned to help ensure similar issues are avoided in the future.

We appreciate the display of patience and understanding by everyone in the campus community as we worked to restore these systems.

Gabriel Gonzalez, Interim Associate Vice Chancellor for IT and Chief Information Officer
Dave Browne, Executive Director of Campus IT Infrastructure
