Speaker Series & Events

This speaker series and other events will provide the opportunity to be in a community and learn something new through the DEIBJA lens. The speaker series will bring presenters from outside UC Berkeley as well as colleagues from across campus to share their knowledge and lived experiences. Feel free to share this information with anyone who might be interested.

Upcoming Speakers & Events

Our core values are trust, respect, accountability, integrity, and honesty.

Get to know your Action Team!

Each month, we will highlight an Action Team member so our bIT community can get to know more about the amazing individuals who volunteer their time to identify and help remove professional barriers related to inequality and racial trauma.

This month, let’s get to know: John Ives, Security Operations Manager (in ISO)

1. Why did you join the Action Team?

Several years ago, I got involved in The Diana Initiative (https://www.dianainitiative.org(link is external)), a non-profit that is dedicated to bringing more underrepresented people into Information Security. Through my work with them, I learned a lot about some of the struggles people experience in joining that industry. I also found a welcoming community that was resourceful, cared for each other, and were dedicated to things that I believed in. When the action team had its call for volunteers, it felt like an extension to the work I do for TDI. In particular, I wanted to bring the lessons I learned there to the process of hiring and growing talent.

2.  What is your favorite thing about being on the Action Team?

It's probably the team itself. Everyone is supportive, and it feels like everyone's perspective is valued.

 3.  What do you enjoy doing outside of work?

I enjoy toying with crafting new cocktails and mocktails. I also enjoy Lego and snowboarding. So basically, none of my hobbies are inexpensive.

4.  Please share an interesting fact!

By the time I finished high school, I had attended 8 different schools, and twice I attended the same schools in non-consecutive years.

5.  What was your first job?

Technically, it was probably doing filing and some billing for my mom, who was a family law attorney. The first one that I had, where I had to actually apply and had an hourly wage, was at a campsite (think science camp with dorms and food hall) in Nisene Marks State Park, which also happened to be the epicenter of the Loma Prieta earthquake in 1989. To date myself, the quake came later.

DEIB @ 3
Tuesday, June 24 | 3-3:30 p.m.

The third Tuesday of each month (the 4th Tuesday this month), join Britt for a 30-minute collaborative conversation about a specific article/podcast/book chapter/video that they provide in the Newsletter (and the calendar invite)!

Why do people dig in deeper when presented with facts that challenge their beliefs? Rather than changing their minds, they often strengthen their original positions – a phenomenon known as the Backfire Effect. In our current climate of polarization and information overload, understanding this psychological tendency (and its related concept of backlash) offers valuable insights for navigating difficult conversations and examining our own thought processes.

Join us for an open exploration of how we process conflicting information and what this means for effective dialogue in our personal and professional lives.
