IT Disaster Recovery is a set of strategies and procedures designed to rapidly restore IT systems, data, and infrastructure following a disruption, such as a natural disaster, cyberattack, or hardware failure. It involves planning for data backup, system redundancy, and a clear response framework to minimize interruption and impact.
A fundamental principle of IT recovery at UC Berkeley is to guide campus departments and units to have appropriate resources available to recover institutional information and IT resources in the event of an unavoidable or unforeseen disaster, whether natural or human-made.
Department Operations Center
A Department Operations Center (DOC) is a centralized physical or virtual gathering of staff to fulfill the critical responsibilities of your department during emergencies and times of disruption. It serves as the department’s command center, ensuring effective communication, decision-making, and resource management during an incident. The Berkeley IT DOC is an Appendix of the campus Emergency Operations Plan
A full-scale campus response and recovery from a major incident requires the participation of many different campus departments. To facilitate those actions, essential response departments develop a DOC model and plan to coordinate the actions of their personnel and equipment and to facilitate communication to and from the EOC. DOCs are established and activated by individual departments to coordinate and control actions specific to that department during an emergency event.
When to Activate the DOC: Examples & Scenarios
- In the event of a Data Center outage.
- A prolonged major outage of any core IT service (e.g., Network, Wi-Fi, CalNet).
- Activated by EOC (Emergency Operations Center).
- Major environmental threats and disasters (e.g., earthquakes, fires).
- Civil disturbance, including protests, unrest, and other human-caused threats.
