Hello One IT Community!

On Aug. 5, 2024, NASA announced the collaboration with UC Berkeley to bring the Savio Research Computing Cluster to Moffett Field, expanding beyond Earl Warren Hall. This significant partnership between Research IT and Berkeley IT is a result of several years of hard work and we are thrilled to share the arrival of this major milestone. As Berkeley Research CTO Ken Lutz noted, “Berkeley must offer advanced capabilities and capacity to researchers. Our teams meet every week to coordinate the onboarding of new faculty equipment.

As we prepare to ramp up technical support for instruction during the summer sessions final exam period and the beginning of the fall semester, we are implementing our customary IT change freezes on production changes for UC Berkeley systems. These freezes enable us to provide optimal IT service and systems performance for our campus and minimize potential disruptions during peak periods of academic activity when our services are in greater demand.

The BayAreaCISO ORBIE Awards honor chief information security officers (CISOs) who have demonstrated excellence in technology leadership, and this year two University of California CISOs are finalists! Congratulations to Allison Henry (CISO at UC Berkeley) and April Sather (CISO at UC Office of the President) on being finalists for the 2024 BayAreaCISO Orbie Awards!

New safeguards have been added to help protect the campus community from phishing attacks that could result in unauthorized access to employees’ UCPath accounts and paycheck information.

After campus stakeholder review and approval by the Information Risk Governance Committee (IRGC), we are pleased to announce that UC Berkeley’s Data Classification Standard, now called the Data and IT Resource Classification Standard, has been updated to include Recovery Level (RL) from IS-12, the systemwide IT Recovery Policy. 

On June 20 One IT hosted their annual picnic at UC Berkeley’s Faculty Club Glade. One IT is a diverse community comprising UC Berkeley’s many IT organizations, including tech, data, and design enthusiasts. Read about the history, planning, and experience behind the picnic and exclusive insights from outgoing interim CIO Gabriel Gonzalez and new CIO Tracy Shinn. I am Megan Sacyat, Communications Assistant with Berkeley IT, and this is my experience attending the One IT picnic for the first time as a remote student worker.

The FY25 One IT Strategic Plan highlights the collective work being done across the technology landscape at Berkeley, from enhancing classroom technology to providing the foundational infrastructure the campus needs to thrive. This extensive plan, involving 30 campus units, is designed to support the campus mission and invest in instruction and research by leveraging cutting-edge technology and fostering an inclusive, secure, and efficient IT environment.

After considering and incorporating feedback from multiple stakeholders regarding campus operations impacts, Sunday, July 7, 2024, has been selected for the necessary shutdown of the Data Center. Berkeley IT will be working with Facilities Services to make electrical system repairs that will restore Data Center emergency generator power capabilities. This work supports the campus academic and research mission by ensuring the Data Center and the many technology services it hosts remain functional during campus power outages.
