One IT Colleagues,

I’m very excited to share the news that we have officially launched our new organization: Berkeley Information Technology! This was announced last week during our monthly all-staff meeting with a record attendance of 277 staff participating. Our official name for external and campus-wide formal usage is now:

  • Information Technology at UC Berkeley; or

  • UC Berkeley's Information Technology department

Informally, we are Berkeley IT, abbreviated as bIT when we are communicating within our department and the One IT community. You can view our updated org chart hereOur department now consists of seven units:

As a reminder, we kicked off our Organizational Design Project (ODP) in Oct. 2020 with the goal to create an organization that is positioned to both manage the impacts of the campus financial situation and is prepared to strategically meet the needs of our institution going forward. The objective guiding our work over the past 14 months was to:

Build an agile central IT organization that serves as a strategic partner with the UC Berkeley community to efficiently deliver campus IT services. Create a structure and culture that is inclusive, actively embraces diversity and equity, where IT professionals can do their best work

Closing out our ODP, I’m proud to say that we’ve met these objectives! Learn more about ODP

Some have asked about the distinction between Berkeley IT and One IT: Berkeley IT is one department among the many across campus that make up the broader One IT community. Read more about our bIT organization and One IT

A campus-wide announcement about our name change will be sent to faculty and staff in the new year. I will also share info on our new department at the next CIO Forum on Jan. 13. If you have any questions before then, please contact Gert Reynaert, ODP Project Manager at

Wishing you and yours a restful and safe winter break,
