Dear IT Community,
We want to alert you to a phishing scam that has been observed recently involving Google Calendar. This scam involves fake calendar invites or meetings with misleading subjects that may contain links, attachments, or instructions intended to steal credentials or personal/financial information.
What to look for:
- Invitation emails or events from unknown senders that you didn’t request.
- Event titles designed to cause urgency (e.g., Invoice, Payment Overdue, Crypto Purchase).
- Event descriptions with links, attachments, or phone numbers asking you to log in, pay, or provide personal info.
- Invites that look like they come from an @berkeley.edu address but don’t match the sender’s identity.
What you can do:
Learn how to spot, report, and block unwanted calendar invites while keeping your schedule safe and clutter-free.
- Do not click links or attachments, and don’t call numbers in unexpected calendar events.
- Report first: Always report suspicious invites as spam before deleting them.
- Click on the event entry in your calendar, click the three vertical dots (More options), and select Report as spam.
- Adjust settings to fit your needs: Consider whether adjusting your Google Calendar settings to prevent further phishing is right for you.
