Planned Data Center Outage: Sunday, July 7

June 17, 2024

To our campus community,

After considering and incorporating feedback from multiple stakeholders regarding campus operations impacts, Sunday, July 7, 2024, has been selected for the necessary shutdown of the Data Center. Berkeley IT will be working with Facilities Services to make electrical system repairs that will restore Data Center emergency generator power capabilities. This work supports the campus academic and research mission by ensuring the Data Center and the many technology services it hosts remain functional during campus power outages.

As you may know, the Data Center houses many of our mission-critical servers on campus, so powering things off will impact access to many systems including CalTime, Cal Central, Student Information Systems / Berkeley Campus Solutions (SIS/BCS), Cal Answers, Berkeley Financial System (BFS), BearBuy, and Savio Condo/Berkeley Research Cluster, to name a few. We understand this may disrupt your ability to work. The holiday weekend timing of the outage was carefully selected to minimize the overall impact.

Systems Impacted

The following systems will not be available during the Data Center shutdown period. The systems listed below will be down from 4:30 a.m. through 8 p.m. on Sunday, July 7 (times are estimated and subject to change). View the list of systems that will not be impacted during the shutdown.

Updates will be provided as the work is completed and systems are brought back online. Please check the system status page, which will be updated regularly. Service providers will also communicate status updates related to their services as they are shut down before the power work begins, and as they are restored afterward. Once systems are back online the system status page will be updated accordingly.
