Update on Planned Data Center Outage: Sunday, Aug. 11

July 29, 2024

To our campus community,

Despite our best efforts, the Data Center maintenance on July 7 was unsuccessful and must be attempted again on Sunday, Aug. 11. Berkeley IT collaborated with Facilities Services, suppliers, and campus stakeholders to select this new date to ensure maintenance is completed before fall instruction begins. Completing this work is integral to campus communication and information services remaining functional during campus power outages. Visit our FAQs page to learn more about this project

Since the Data Center houses many of our mission-critical servers on campus, powering things off will impact access to many systems including CalTime, Cal Central, Student Information Systems / Berkeley Campus Solutions (SIS/BCS), Cal Answers, Berkeley Financial System (BFS), BearBuy, and Savio Condo/Berkeley Research Cluster, to name a few. We understand this may disrupt your ability to work and we apologize for any inconvenience.

Systems Impacted

The following systems will not be available during the Data Center shutdown period. The systems listed below will be down from 2 a.m. through 10:30 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 11 (times are estimated and subject to change). View the list of systems that will not be impacted during the shutdown.

Updates will be provided as the work is completed. Please check the system status page, which will be updated regularly as systems are back online. Service providers will also communicate status updates related to their services as they are shut down before the power work begins, and as they are restored afterward.

Please direct any questions about this critical maintenance to Sam Griffin at samgriffin@berkeley.edu

Moving forward, we are establishing a best practice of bi-annual maintenance windows for Data Center work to minimize disruptions. We appreciate your patience as we complete this important work.

Kind regards,

Tracy Shinn, Associate Vice Chancellor for IT and Chief Information Officer
Dave Browne, Executive Director of Campus IT Infrastructure, Berkeley IT
