UC Berkeley students, faculty, and staff have a few options for building websites, including both campus-supported and self-service, DIY offerings. The table below can help you decide which option may work best for your needs.

GitHub @Berkeley

GitHub @Berkeley is UC Berkeley’s on-premise, private instance of GitHub, and is available for campus software development teams and individual developers to build software in private repositories or repositories shared within the Berkeley domain. Faculty, staff, students, and certain affiliates are eligible to use GitHub @Berkeley and the associated GitHub Pages to build websites. GitHub @Berkeley is not suitable for public or open-source projects.

Google Sites

Google Sites allows you to create a simple personal website, wiki, or project site without any prior programming or design skills. With an intuitive drag and drop interface, you can work alone or collaborate with others to build your website in a short amount of time. Sites is fully integrated with Google Drive, and can be created from the Sites homepage or within Drive.

Open Berkeley Managed Website Platform

Open Berkeley is a complete web publishing turnkey solution that includes hosting, site spin-up, training, site launch, security, accessibility, privacy, and maintenance updates, branding, new features, and ongoing support. Campus employees with no prior web experience can use Open Berkeley's powerful toolset to easily build sophisticated websites, and customers can rely on Open Berkeley to provide critical solutions to ongoing security, accessibility, privacy, and maintenance issues.

Siteimprove

Siteimprove is a website monitoring tool that helps us improve accessibility and usability. Siteimprove is administered by UCOP, and locally managed by the Digital Accessibility unit in Berkeley IT.

All berkeley.edu and subdomain websites must be monitored in Siteimprove.

Whether you need an online survey, a registration form for an event, or other activities, you have a few campus options to choose from.

Web Hosting (Drupal & WordPress)

A hosting platform that provides tools for building and maintaining Drupal or WordPress websites. The service is provided by an external vendor, Pantheon.

Web Hosting (UNIX)

The UNIX Team offers secure, fast, and reliable web hosting solutions. For all web hosting options the UNIX Team maintains the hardware and hypervisor layers of each web site and allow customers to monitor and maintain their own webpages and applications.

CalWeb Basic (UNIX/Apache) - Designed for traditional, static content web sites and for sites requiring limited database support. CalWeb Farm (UNIX/Apache) - Designed for web-based applications that include significant program based content and/or significant database connectivity.
