One IT colleagues,

On Friday, May 21 at 6 a.m. (this time was updated on May 11), the network team will be performing work to migrate all layer three routing in the Warren Hall Data Center from the existing network core to the newly installed upgraded core. While we attempt to perform all work with as little disruption as possible, the nature of this change will require an expected 30 minute outage for data center connectivity while it is performed.

Libraries have historically served as a hub for access to technology by providing publicly available computers with access to the Internet and workshops on technology topics. Academic libraries Research IT commonly house their own internal information technology (IT) team to serve unique needs in acquisition, resource management, access, discovery, and preservation of research materials. However, these internal teams are not designed to address the technical needs of researchers, like developing data management plans and advising on storage.

To our campus community:

The UC Berkeley Information Security Office, in coordination with the UC Office of the President (UCOP), is responding to a security incident involving UC employee information.

Beginning Monday, March 29, many UC Berkeley email accounts started receiving messages stating that their personal data had been stolen and would be released. We learned from our colleagues that similar messages were being received in email accounts for multiple campuses throughout the UC system.

Do I Actually “Do” Anything?

A few months ago my daughter was working on a school assignment involving career exploration, and as part of her research she asked me, “Mom, what do you do at work?”

Feeling very important I answered, “I’m a Chief Information Security Officer, so I’m responsible for protecting all the computers on the UC Berkeley network from hackers.”
